Austin’s Independent Music Ball Adopts Its First Theme for 2026

Sonic Guild, one of Austin’s leading music nonprofits formerly known as Black Fret, is set to host its annual Sonic Guild Ball on Friday, December 11, with significant changes. This year marks the first themed ball, inspired by the iconic 80s and early 90s sitcom, ‘The Golden Girls’, incorporating the famous theme song’s lines, “thank you for being a friend.” Guests are encouraged to embrace 80s-inspired fashion for the occasion.

During the event, Sonic Guild will award tour grants to 24 artists, including nominees from Austin, Seattle, and Colorado. Notable nominees based in Austin include Cormae, LeTrainiump, and J Soulja, while past nominees comprise Flight by Nothing and Next of Kin.

Flight by Nothing expressed gratitude for the support, stating that funding significantly impacts their ability to tour, allowing them to focus on sharing music across the country.

The ball returns to ACL Live at the Moody Theater, remaining open to the public after first doing so in 2025. With over a decade of experience, Sonic Guild aims to create a ‘Best of Austin’ celebration, as noted by Executive Director Bobby Garza. Appointed in May 2026, Garza has a history of producing local events and emphasized Sonic Guild’s potential to aid artist success.

Sonic Guild members can attend the ball for free, while public tickets are available starting at $30 on sonicguild.org, supporting independent musicians. Ten grant-winning artists will perform at the event, with sponsors including KUTX. Doors open at 6 pm, and the ball begins at 7 pm.
