Popular Austin Civic Educator Launches Optimistic Texas History Podcast

Becky Bullard is launching her new podcast and YouTube show, The Texan Optimist, on September 23. Known locally for her brand Democrasexy, Bullard promotes civic engagement and understanding of Texas politics. Her brand was a finalist for Best Social Media Personality in the Austin Chronicle’s 2026 Best of Austin Awards. Previously, she co-hosted The Rabble podcast, which focused on Texas politics.

The Texan Optimist aims to showcase stories about Texas women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and people of color who brought about significant changes in the U.S. The podcast is structured as a 501(c)3 compliant project, indicating that while it discusses historical events that prompted radical change, it will not advocate for any political parties or candidates.

The first episode will spotlight Sarah Weddington, the attorney who argued Roe v. Wade, which expanded abortion access in 1973 and was overturned in 2022. Bullard plans to host a screening of this episode on October 22 at Weddington’s former law office. She hopes to petition for a historical marker to be placed there.

In the second episode, the discussion will focus on Lawrence v. Texas, the case that decriminalized gay sex. Bullard discovered Tyron Garner, one of the plaintiffs in the case, passed away in 2006 without proper farewell. To honor him, she will participate in a community wedding celebration on September 27 for Nikki DaVaughn, a guest on the episode and former host of City Cast Austin.
