Jordan Elliott released by Titans after firearm incident. Here’s what we know

The Tennessee Titans announced the release of veteran defensive tackle Jordan Elliott on Tuesday, providing limited information about the circumstances that led to this decision. Reports that followed later on Tuesday revealed troubling details involving Elliott threatening a teammate and almost retrieving a firearm from his vehicle.

A statement from the Titans confirmed that an incident occurred at the team’s facility on October 15, leading to the team’s review and Elliott’s release, but did not elaborate on the seriousness of the event. Initially, it appeared to be a standard altercation during practice, common in NFL settings. However, sources indicated that emotions boiled over during practice, particularly between Elliott and 1st-round pick OT J.C. Latham, culminating in a physical confrontation. Elliott was sent off the field, threw his pads in anger, and left the facility.

Fellow defensive tackle John Franklin-Myers intervened as Elliott was headed to his vehicle in the player parking area. Reportedly, Elliott intended to retrieve a firearm from his car, though the specifics of his intentions remain unclear. Franklin-Myers was able to convince Elliott not to proceed with this plan. It is unknown if Elliott returned to the facility afterward.

No police report was filed regarding the incident. A source close to the situation suggested Elliott was facing significant personal problems away from football, which may have contributed to his behavior that day, stating that his reactions in the locker room were viewed as extreme by his teammates.

Elliott did not participate in the Titans’ game against the Colts the following Sunday. Footage from the facility captured much of the event, prompting the team’s decision to part ways with him shortly after.

This incident follows another recent peculiar situation involving the Titans, as top cornerback Alontae Taylor was not included in the lineup against the Colts. Coach Robert Saleh described Taylor’s future with the team as a matter that would be considered as a staff moving forward. Taylor had been a significant acquisition for the team in the offseason, while Elliott was brought in by Saleh specifically for his defensive strategies. Just six weeks into the season, one player has been released and the other may be on the trading block.
