Hold On: Tesla’s Autonomous Driving Isn’t Ready for All Roads Yet

On Wednesday, Tesla revealed its timeline for unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD), forecasting a launch around the second quarter of 2027 during its Q3 earnings call.

Wait: Your autonomous Tesla won't drive everywhere just yet

On Wednesday, Tesla revealed its timeline for unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD), forecasting a launch around the second quarter of 2027 during its Q3 earnings call. However, the feature will only function within designated geofences where Tesla’s Robotaxi service is currently available. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s VP of AI, specified that the first rollout of unsupervised FSD for private Tesla vehicles will be accompanied by FSD V15.

Currently, the Robotaxi service is operational in parts of Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, Tampa, and the San Francisco Bay Area. In the Bay Area, every Tesla Robotaxi has a human operator overseeing its operation.

Elluswamy underscored the necessity for customer Model Ys to be part of the geofenced fleet management system for full autonomy to be realized. For instance, in Austin, this could encompass around 260 square miles, excluding high-speed roadways. While this advancement is a step forward, lengthy self-driven road trips won’t be possible initially. Tesla has not elaborated on the rationale for confining unsupervised FSD to these geofences, although concerns about liability likely play a role.

Elluswamy dismissed claims that competitors could quickly replicate Tesla’s FSD technology, emphasizing the complexity of the challenge. “It’s so difficult,” he stated, suggesting that other companies may struggle to address the myriad issues associated with achieving true autonomy in driving.
